What is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula is Mama’s best friend in those first weeks and months after a baby joins the household. Though her needs will certainly change from day-to-day and each family is unique in their needs, a doula will provide the following support:

  • Basic Newborn Care

  • Support Mama with Sleep Assistance

  • Provide Soothing Techniques

  • Babywearing Education

  • Breastfeeding/Bottlefeeding Support

  • Household/Nursery Organization

  • Healthy Postpartum Focused Meal Preparation

  • One-on-one Yoga/Stretching sessions to help Mama FEEL good- because Happy Mama means Healthy Baby!

Anything else needed to provide a peaceful transition into Motherhood- whether it be helping to catch up on Birth Announcement mailings or wearing baby while you get a Mani-Pedi, a postpartum doula will be by your side when you need her!

My sister has kids and will be staying with me. Do I still need a doula?

Friends and family are irreplaceable sources of comfort during the postpartum period. But there are topics and practices which can trigger a strong reaction from many people such as co-sleeping, pacifier use, and baby scheduling. A recent national poll found that nearly two thirds of new mothers feel judged about their parenting choices, with most of the criticism coming from family. A postpartum doula can help parents make informed decisions and move forward within a judgement-free space. Postpartum doulas are constantly staying on top of the latest research, making them an up-to-date well of information regarding your current universe- that of you and your baby!

When is the best time to hire a postpartum doula?

Ideally, sometime in the third trimester, so that you can have sufficient time to research, interview and find the right fit. But not to worry: anytime during the fourth trimester is not too late!

OK, but how much does it cost?

$25/hr with a daily minimum of four hours.
