Years ago, and to this day in other cultures, women relied upon the "village" to surround a new mother in the first weeks after childbirth. This practice of "mothering the mother" helped a new mother to carve out her new role of nurturing her newborn. Sadly, in this modern-day Western culture, this has been lost to our new mother community, and this lack of support along with fatigue can be a contributing factor to perinatal mood disorders. A 2009 study in the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic & Neonatal Nursing found that postpartum doulas effectively promote maternal responsiveness and competence in new moms, filling in the "village gap" so that Mama and baby relationship can bloom.
